"The biggest shift I have seen in 2025 and continuing in 2026 is the demand for modular sofas," says Marissa Burrett, lead designer at DreamSofa. "It's what clients request first". The rise of hybrid living spaces—where rooms function as offices, entertainment zones, and guest accommodations—has made fixed furniture feel impractical.

Modular systems offer both the visual coherence of a sectional with the flexibility of individual pieces. Even clients drawn to classic styles are requesting modular versions, with clean arms and timeless silhouettes.

The "cloud couch" took over our Instagram feeds for years—and now, the pendulum is swinging. Designers across the board report moving away from exaggerated, slouchy silhouettes toward pieces with more refined shapes.

"Low profile and deep seated sofas remain popular, but they are more refined than the oversized cloud era of the past few years," says designer Philip Thomas Vanderford. He emphasizes that scale is shifting decisively: "The pendulum is moving away from exaggerated bulk toward sofas that feel generous without dominating a room".

If there's one request designers receive universally, it's for fabrics that can withstand real life. The performance fabric market is booming, driven by pet owners, families with children, and anyone tired of treating their sofa like a museum piece.

"Performance fabric is the biggest request we get from clients with kids and pets at home," Burrett says. "Fabric choices are getting more and more practical without losing the comfort and luxury feel".

Rectangles are out; "social curves" are in. By curving the seating inward, the sofa creates a natural "conversation pit" without requiring architectural renovation. It is a bold, moody choice that turns the furniture into a self-contained room, perfect for open-plan spaces that need a distinct, intimate anchor.

This design embraces the "grounding" trend. The profile is incredibly low, keeping the sightlines of the room completely open. It is designed for the "sprawling" lifestyle—perfect for long, lazy evenings where the boundary between sitting and lying down completely disappears.

Modular sofas continue their reign as a top trend, and for good reason. These sectionals are made of individual pieces, or "modules," that you can arrange and rearrange to fit your space and needs perfectly. A modular sofa can be an L-shape one day, a long straight couch the next, and two separate loveseats when company comes over.

"Embrace the zoning capabilities of a modular sofa," says Brynna Evans, Living Spaces staff designer. "In an open-plan home, use an L-shaped configuration to create a visual divide between the living and dining areas".

In 2026, the focus is on adaptability, bold silhouettes, and a return to lasting materials. Whether you opt for a modular system, a curved design, or a low-profile silhouette, the key is choosing a sofa that feels intentional, grounded, and enduring rather than overly styled or performative.
